Kebumen:

A Model for Forest-Preserving Economics

From Tamanu Conservation to Comprehensive Community Empowerment

Since 2021, our Kebumen program has evolved from a tamanu harvesting cooperative into a comprehensive forest-preserving economics model, working with 100+ women through the Sinergi Mekarsari Lestari Cooperative and supported by Women Earth Alliance (WEA) to sustainably manage 153 hectares while expanding agroforestry with turmeric, ginger, and medicinal plants. We've developed three market-ready product brands—Salaka (coconut cakes), Andamoi (personal care), and Yaso (herbal drinks)—supported by solar drying infrastructure and strong cooperative governance, creating sustainable market channels that prove forests are more valuable standing than cut down.

What We Do in Kebumen

Partnering with Women Earth Alliance (WEA), we work with 100+ women to enhance forest quality while expanding sustainable agroforestry systems that integrate turmeric, ginger, coconut, and medicinal plants under existing tree cover, providing essential safety equipment and technical training for sustainable harvesting. Our community-led product development approach guides them from R&D to market launch of eco-friendly products, creating market-ready brands including Salaka (traditional coconut cakes), Andamoi (natural personal care products), and Yaso (herbal wellness drinks) with proper branding, quality control, and production standards.

We've built essential infrastructure like solar drying facilities while developing robust community governance, financial literacy, and management systems that ensure sustainable community ownership and growth through the cooperative. Our market access and partnership work establishes sustainable sales channels through local tourism, e-commerce, and direct buyer relationships that reward environmental stewardship and provide stable income streams.

Expanding Impact Beyond Tamanu

Our Kebumen program demonstrates how identifying unique environmental potential and partnering with communities creates lasting conservation incentives. By diversifying from tamanu-only harvesting to comprehensive agroforestry products and crops, we've proven that forests generate more value standing than cut down—creating a replicable model for forest-preserving economics across Indonesia.
